Jazz as it is meant to be
Bill Kenney, Peggi Cella, Seth Rosen and Gene Epstein-better known to northeast Ohio audiences as Gene's Jazz Hot-are having a CD release party for their first album, Hot, on Thursday, August 17 at Loganberry Books near Shaker Square in Cleveland. The quartet, featuring two lesbians and two straight men, are often described as playing "seriously happy music." Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that they play jazz at it is meant to be played, classic songs performed with heart, soul and an ear for detail. While the lack of piano and the very audible presence of guitar diverges from the standard perception of jazz music, the skill with which the music is played, the mellifluousness of Cella's vocals-whether performing normal lyrics or scat-and the ability of each member of the band to lend their voice combine to create a truly enjoyable CD.
The album will be available for sale at the release party for $15, which equals $1 per song. It's a bargain at the price, especially for the standards like "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" and "Summertime."
The party begins at 6 pm, with an hour of live music starting at 6:30 pm. Come on out to Loganberry Books, 13015 Larchmere Boulevard, a gem for bibliophiles and art lovers alike, and enjoy the hot sounds on a summer's night.
For those who can't make it on August 17, Gene's Jazz Hot plays twice a month at Café Limbo, down the street from Loganberry Books. Whether at the bookstore or the café, Gene's Jazz Hot will have the place jumping.
